Frappé isn’t just a coffee. It’s a symbol of Greek relaxation, summer, conversation and good company. Its story began by chance in 1957 at the Thessaloniki International Fair, when a Nestlé employee, Dimitris Vakondios, used a shaker to mix instant coffee with cold water and ice — simply because he didn’t have access to hot water. That’s how the frappé was born!
Since then, this frothy coffee has become an essential part of everyday Greek life. With a straw in hand, on balconies, beaches, or in cafés, the frappé goes hand-in-hand with endless conversations, philosophical debates and summer memories.
Whether sketos (no sugar), metrios (medium), glykos (sweet), with milk or without, frappé is a way of life. It’s Greece in every sip. And if you ask a Greek what frappé really is, don’t expect a simple answer. They’ll probably say: "Come, sit and have a frappé with me.. and you’ll understand!"
